How do I reset a garbage disposal?
Short answerPress the red reset button on the bottom or side of the disposal unit. If it won't stay running, check for a jam or tripped circuit breaker.
Locate the Reset Button
Most disposals have a red reset button on the bottom or lower side of the unit. Make sure the power switch is off, then press the button firmly until it clicks. Wait a few minutes, then turn the switch on.
If the disposal hums but doesn't spin, it's jammed. Turn off power, then use a 1/4-inch hex wrench (often included) in the bottom hole to manually rotate the flywheel back and forth to free the jam.
If Reset Doesn't Work
Check your home's circuit breaker or fuse box. A tripped breaker will cut power to the disposal. Reset the breaker and try again.
If the disposal still won't run, the motor may be burned out or the wall switch may be faulty. In that case, call a professional or replace the unit. Never stick your hand into the disposal.
- Press reset button firmly
- Clear jams with hex wrench
- Check circuit breaker
- Test wall switch for power
- Call a pro if motor is dead
Common mistakes
- Pressing the reset button repeatedly without clearing a jam, which can burn out the motor.
- Using your hand to remove debris instead of tongs or a wrench.
- Forgetting to check the circuit breaker after a reset fails.
